Town Hall Meeting,
Monday May 15th

Tomorrow, Monday, May 15th at 7:00 p.m., I’ll participate in a live town hall meeting at Onondaga Community College.
CNY Central will be hosting and televising the event on both WSTM-NBC 3 and WTVH-CBS 5, as well as streaming online at cnycentral.com and on Facebook to ensure that folks across the 24th Congressional District may tune in.

Our event will be entirely devoted to questions selected at random from members of the audience and via social media.  You can submit your question via social media using #KatkoTownHall.  I look forward to engaging in constructive dialogue about the issues most important to Central New York families.

Protecting CNY Industry from Unfair Trade Practices

This week I highlighted the impact of unfair trade practices on local industry.
I stood at Byrne Dairy with plant employees to discuss the negative impacts of Canada's protectionist dairy policies on our local farmers and milk processors. I also visited earlier this week with employees at Nucor Steel in Auburn, who face different challenges as unfairly traded imports enter the U.S. market and make it increasingly difficult to compete. I applaud the President for standing up for fair trade and will continue to fight in Congress for our local workforce.

Working to Protect Victims of Animal Fighting, Save Taxpayer Dollars

Standing at DeWitt Anima Hospital Shelter, I unveiled bipartisan legislation I’ve introduced to protect animals seized under federal animal fighting and gambling statutes.  During my time as a federal prosecutor in Syracuse, I witnessed many cases involving senseless cruelty to animals and recognized that the system creates lengthy forfeiture cases that leave abused animals in shelters for months – unfairly placing the financial responsibility of care for these animals on CNY taxpayers.

The HEART Act expedites the disposition of these animals, reduces the amount of time they are held in shelters, and importantly, shifts the cost of care for animals from the taxpayer to the individual responsible for harm.  I am incredibly grateful for the support of local welfare groups like Cuse Pit Crew, the CNY SPCA, the ASPCA, and local law enforcement, who joined me in announcing this legislation.

Legislative Update: Addressing Student Loan Debt

In this economy, new graduates are faced with many difficulties as they transition out of college and enter the workforce – and student loan debt is at the top of that list.   Addressing the high cost of college and the crushing burden of student loan debt requires innovative and thoughtful changes in policy.

In the case where financially stressed student loan borrowers have no other option but to seek bankruptcy relief, these individuals are unable to discharge their student loan debt.  While this is a last option for many, it should not be the case that student loan debt is the only form of debt that cannot be discharged.  That’s why I’ve introduced bipartisan legislation to correct that problem. We must continue to explore ways to make borrowing simpler and more manageable for students so that higher education can remain accessible to students from all backgrounds.

Around Central New York

Congratulations to the 2017 graduates of the Plumbers and Steamfitters 267 Apprenticeship program! Apprenticeships and vocational training are critical to growing our workforce and boosting our local economy. These men and women spent five years of classroom and shop training in the Plumbing, Steamfitting, and HVAC industry.

Great to be a part of the North Side Learning Center's Spring Into Literacy dinner to support education and literacy for new Americans in our community.

Honored to take part in On Point For College's Celebration Dinner! As a federal prosecutor, I saw the impact of poverty in our community every day. This organization fights to end the cycle of poverty by encouraging and supporting at-risk youth to dream big and pursue higher education opportunities.

Amid rising lake levels on Lake Ontario, I visited Fair Haven to get an update from our local officials.  I also once again called on the International Joint Commission (IJC) to make greater accommodations to compensate shoreline homeowners for property damage.

Finally, Happy Mother's Day to all -- including my wife, Robin, my mother, Mary Lou, and my mother-in-law, Shirley!

Again, thank you for subscribing to my e-newsletter!

Sincerely,
John Katko (NY-24)

Rep. Katko: Why I voted against GOP healthcare bill

Obamacare is deeply and systemically flawed, and left untouched it will collapse under its own weight with dire consequences for Central New York families and healthcare providers. For all of Obamacare's many faults, a repeal without a viable replacement would pull the rug out from under millions of Americans and worsen conditions in an already failing healthcare marketplace. That's why I have long maintained that we cannot repeal Obamacare without a viable replacement ready to take its place.

Rep. John Katko: Prioritizing investment in water infrastructure

As Congress moves forward to address the infrastructure needs of this country, I am mindful that we must keep spending in check and act carefully to make investments. As an indispensable public health and economic necessity, water infrastructure deserves to be prioritized. Each of these efforts will help leverage private financing, and create economic growth, while protecting access to clean water and restoring our natural resources at a relatively low cost to taxpayers.
