Announcing NY-24 Military Academy Appointments

I am pleased to announce the appointment of 11 bright young men and women from Onondaga, Cayuga, Wayne and Oswego Counties to our nation's esteemed military academies.
These dedicated young students have demonstrated their scholarship, service, leadership abilities and determination to serve our great nation. I was honored to nominate these students and wish them the very best as they begin their studies and service to our country.

2017 Congressional Art Competition Winner

Congratulations to Emily Irving, a senior at Union Springs High School in Cayuga County, who was named the winner of this year’s Congressional Art Competition for New York’s 24th District.
Central New York is home to many young, talented artists. Each year, my office receives a number of remarkable pieces of artwork, and this year was no exception.   I look forward to seeing Emily’s piece in Washington, where it will be on display in the U.S. Capitol for visitors to view for one year.  Congratulations, Emily!

Legislative Update: Bipartisan Legislation to Enhance Information-Sharing Among Law Enforcement Passes House

For nearly twenty years, I served as a federal prosecutor in Central New York.
In Congress, I remain committed to supporting policies that prioritize the safety and efficiency of our men and women in law enforcement.   I’m proud to announce that the House passed a measure that I authored to streamline information sharing and communication among law enforcement at all levels. This bill will help ensure these brave men and women can continue their efforts to keep our communities safe.

Fighting for Fair Trade Deals to Benefit Central New York

I recently testified before the International Trade Commission in support of Nucor Steel in Auburn, highlighting the impact of unfairly traded rebar imports from Japan, Taiwan and Turkey on the domestic steel industry.
I can confidently say that U.S. steel manufacturers, such as Nucor, produce some of the best rebar on the market and, given a fair opportunity, our producers can compete with any steel producers in the world.  However, when foreign competitors receive government subsidies and dump their products into U.S. markets, American producers suffer.  It is abundantly clear that these unfairly traded imports have had a devastating impact on our country’s rebar producers and their hardworking employees.  In Congress, I will continue to fight for fair trade policies to ensure our local workers have can compete globally.

Lake Levels Update: Urging FEMA Assistance

With rising lake levels gravely impacting communities along the southern shore of Lake Ontario, I’ve spent time visiting with property owners and local officials in Fair Haven, Sodus and Oswego.
Homeowners, businesses and farmers are suffering substantial and costly damage.  I applaud Governor Cuomo for his attention to this critical and unprecedented situation.  Still, current water levels pose a significant burden and, left unaddressed, will continue to cause damage to shoreline communities across New York State. That’s why I’ve joined Rep. Chris Collins, Rep. Elise Stefanik and Rep. Claudia Tenney to urge the Governor to elevate these concerns by requesting federal assistance from FEMA so that our communities may have access to the assistance they desperately need.

Honoring the Life of Syracuse Police Captain Richard Walsh

I spoke on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives to honor longtime Syracuse Police Capt. Richard Walsh.  I had the privilege of working alongside Capt. Walsh during my time as a federal prosecutor. He was the true definition of a public servant, devoted much of his time to community organizations, and was instrumental in the success of the Syracuse Irish Festival and the Syracuse St. Patrick's Parade. He loved his work, he had the utmost respect of his colleagues and his community, and he was relentless in his efforts to make Central New York a safer, better place. His kindness and generosity will forever be remembered.  You can view my floor remarks by clicking below.

Supporting Upward Bound Funding at Le Moyne College

Pleased to announce that Le Moyne College has been awarded funding to continue administering the Upward Bound program to provide strong educational opportunities so that low-income and first generation students can take steps into personal achievement and economic stability. This program is critical to providing these opportunities for students enrolled in The Syracuse City School District. I’m proud to have worked with Le Moyne in support of this funding, and will continue to fight alongside our community partners to break the vicious cycle of poverty that afflicts our City.

Around Central New York

Checked out Cathy's Cookie Kitchen, a new small business in Armory Square. Cathy and her crew serve up new batches of delicious cookies each week! Thanks for having me.

Loretto is a staple for healthcare in our community for older adults. Thanks to Kim Townsend and Julie Sheedy for stopping by to provide an update on some of their ongoing projects in CNY to provide comprehensive care for our elderly population.

Honored to meet with CNY natives Alan and Louise Smith, their sons Ted and Woody, as well as other members of the ALSA Upstate New York Chapter.  Woody was diagnosed with ALS last March and his parents are incredible advocates for enhanced funding for treatments and research. In Congress, I have advocated for increased funding for the National Institutes of Health so one day soon we can find a cure for ALS and other incurable diseases.

I had a great meeting with Edmond Theobald, Supervisor of the Town of Manlius, and Lori Milne from Skaneateles. We had a productive discussion on issues impacting our local towns and villages, including access to broadband Internet and tax reform.

Finally, I hope you and your family have a safe and happy Memorial Day. I want to thank those who have dedicated their lives to protect our freedom and our democracy, and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our great country.
