Combating Central New York's Opioid Epidemic by Targeting Over-Prescription

The opioid drug epidemic has devastated families in Central New York and communities nationwide
. I have partnered with Long Island Congressman Tom Suozzi to introduce a bipartisan bill which would target the over-prescription of highly addictive opioids and painkillers by limiting the supply of an initial opioid prescription for acute pain to seven days. Doing so will reduce the risk of opioid dependency. Click below to learn more about this bipartisan legislation.

Local Businesses Support Tax Reform

I joined small business owners and local manufacturers for a roundtable discussion on the impact of tax reform for Central New York’s employers
. The message was clear: these businesses are committed to investing in our community. If we deliver comprehensive tax reform, local businesses will reinvest in our workforce, expand operations in our community, and ultimately help grow our local economy.

Legislative Update:
Brownfields Reauthorization Passes House

Earlier this year, I introduced the bipartisan Brownfields Reauthorization Act with Representative Elizabeth Esty
. The legislation reauthorizes the Brownfields program at the Environmental Protection Agency. Communities across Central New York know all too well the impact of industrial pollution, and have benefited directly from the EPA Brownfields Program. I’m proud to have worked in a bipartisan manner to prioritize the reauthorization of this program. With this measure passed through the House, we are one step closer to ensuring industrial sites in our community and across this country are preserved and revitalized. I spoke on the floor of the House in support of this legislation, which you can watch by clicking below.

Human Trafficking Legislation Headed to House Floor

The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee approved two bipartisan bills that I introduced to address human trafficking on the Nation’s highways.
As a former organized crime prosecutor on both the northern border at home in New York and on the southern border in El Paso, Texas, I’ve seen firsthand the horrors of human trafficking. Too often, human traffickers take advantage of our nation’s transportation network to transport their victims from one location to the next, and the U.S. Department of Transportation and the transportation industry play a critical role in preventing and stopping these heinous exploitations. In Congress, I’m committed to addressing this issue and was proud to work on bipartisan legislation in the House Transportation & Infrastructure to help make our transportation systems safer.

Keeping Public Transportation Safe and Secure

I hosted a Transportation and Protective Security Subcommittee hearing to understand how the federal government can better coordinate with state and local surface transportation partners and law enforcement personnel to best protect the traveling public
. During the hearing, we examined security threats facing mass transit systems, challenges that stakeholders and law enforcement personnel face in working to effectively mitigate such threats, and the role of technology in public area security.

Around Central New York

My wife Robin and I recently stopped by the Samaritan Center, an interfaith charity dedicated to feeding the homeless and serving the hungry in Syracuse
. Since 1981, the Samaritan Center has worked to fight hunger in our community by providing nutritious hot meals to anyone in need. We were grateful for the opportunity to be a part of their important work in our community.

Glad to be at Majorpalooza in Auburn to volunteer with local police officers, teachers, and students to help feed less fortunate families in Cayuga and Seneca Counties ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.

I had a great time meeting with the hardworking men and women at Oswego Eagle Beverage!

Meals on Wheels Syracuse is an amazing program that helps many people in need in our community.  This organization provides nutritious meals, and additional assistance, throughout CNY. I'm proud to have supported programs like SNAP in Congress which ensure that many people can afford these meals. Thank you to Meals on Wheels of Syracuse for inviting me to tour the facility and to assist in delivering meals.

Supporting small businesses help our improve our community, as well as our local economy. I had pleasure visiting the Good Guys Barbershop in Oswego.
