Legislative Update: Fort Ontario & Safe Haven Legislation Advances in House

Friends, as you know, I have been focused on making Fort Ontario and Safe Haven a National Park.
I'm proud to announce that the Fort Ontario Study Act, which I authored, has passed the House. This bipartisan legislation will commission a study to determine the site's historical significance and suitability as a National Park.

Following the bill's passage, I had the opportunity to visit with local advocates at Safe Haven to discuss the importance of this measure to Oswego County's growing tourism-based economy as well as the next steps forward as the bill moves to the Senate, where it has been introduced by U.S. Sen Kirsten Gillibrand.

Continuing Efforts to Strengthen Counterterrorism, Keep Airports Safe

The House passed legislation that I authored aimed at bolstering our nation's counterterrorism efforts. With ISIS investigations open in all 50 states, it is imperative that we integrate intelligence, operations and policy to fight terrorism and quickly exchange threat information - and this legislation will help make that possible.

As the Chairman of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Transportation and Protective Security,  I've worked to keep our airports safe and to expose the danger of insider threats.  This week, after two years intense oversight and committee hearings, I released a report revealing the inconsistency in security at airports across the country, the need to educate workers on insider threats, and the importance in identifying new technologies to combat evolving threats.  I'll continue my efforts in Congress to keep our country and our airports safe.

Combating the CNY Heroin Epidemic

There's no question that the heroin epidemic continues to plague Central New York.
During a Homeland Security Committee hearing, I had the opportunity to engage in a meaningful dialogue with Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kelly on the importance of securing our border to prevent heroin and other synthetic drugs from infiltrating our communities and harming our families at alarming rates. I will continue to be engaged on this issue to keep Central New York safe. Click below to watch my questioning of Secretary Kelly.

Congratulating Coach Boeheim on 1,000 Wins

I took to the House floor on Monday to congratulate Coach Boeheim on achieving 1,000 wins, and to reiterate my support for the NCAA Accountability Act, legislation which I've long championed to bring fairness and accountability to the NCAA.  You can watch my remarks by clicking the video link below.

Around Central New York

Good to meet with City of Oswego Mayor Billy Barlow to discuss strengthening our infrastructure, bolstering economic development, and  putting Fort Ontario and Safe Haven on the path towards becoming a National Park.

Made a stop at The Red Sun Fire Roasting Co. in Oswego with Kevin Hill, president of Safe Haven.

Appreciate Khadijo, Jennifer, and Cjala - women working with different organizations throughout Syracuse - for taking the time to visit my office.  We had a productive conversation on the efforts of these women locally to assist refugees, resettlement agencies, and immigrants.

Enjoyed meeting with Beth, Olive, and Louise from InterFaith Works of Central New York.
Committed to working with this organization to make our community a better place for everyone who lives here.

Katko finishes 2-year investigation, aims to address insider threats at U.S. airports

"This report is a result of two years of intense oversight efforts.  At a time when we face increased threats from homegrown radicalization and lone-wolf terrorism, we must ensure that our airport access controls are strong and that we are doing all we can to mitigate insider threats to aviation security."

LOCAL FEATURE
I'm glad to see that Oswego County is reaping the benefits of the refueling that has recently begun at the Fitzpatrick Nuclear Power Plant. Nearly 1,000 jobs have been created to meet the needs of the refueling, which is a big boost to the economy in Oswego. I will continue to be an advocate for nuclear energy and stand by the Fitzpatrick Nuclear Power Plant. Check out the story on WRVO here
