Calling on Top Federal Law Enforcement Agencies to Address Mass Bomb Threats at JCC in Syracuse, Nationwide
|
|
The recurring threats to the Jewish Community Center of Syracuse have threatened the safety and stability of our community. In Central New York – and across the country – the JCC represents a space for families and community members to come together, regardless of faith. These criminal acts are unacceptable. We must have action from our federal law enforcement agencies to investigate, prosecute, and prevent these dangerous threats and acts of intimidation and to protect our communities. That’s why I recently joined a bipartisan group of lawmakers to urge the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Justice and the FBI to address these threats immediately.

I had the pleasure of visiting Café Kubal to celebrate the success of this small business as part of the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Emerging Leaders Program. This free program offers training for growing businesses in our community and offers support, resources and skills to succeed. Congratulations to Cafe Kubal and all of the other local businesses and entrepreneurs who have participated in this successful program!
I recently joined members of the Syracuse Fire Department, in coordination with the Syracuse Crunch, for a charity hockey game to raise awareness for the work of the Firefighter Cancer Foundation of NY. This organization works to prevent and detect cancer and supports research. In Congress, I'm a proud cosponsor of legislation to establish a national registry to better track the prevalence of cancer among firefighters nationwide and will continue to champion this measure.
Productive meeting in Auburn with Heroin Awareness Cayuga County - HEAL - Board Members. Always appreciative of their feedback and insight into what more we can do to continue fighting the devastating heroin epidemic plaguing our region. I have and will continue to be a steadfast advocate for improving access to treatment, strengthening education and prevention efforts, bolstering our law enforcement, and preventing this poison from entering our country.
Thanks to the Onondaga County Medical Society for hosting a legislative roundtable discussion on the future of healthcare in this country. The Affordable Care Act is deeply flawed and without action, it has the potential to collapse. However, I have not - and will not - support a repeal of this law without an adequate replacement in motion. Appreciated this dialogue and the opportunity to hear directly from local healthcare providers about what needs to be included in a strong replacement, and I will bring their ideas to Congress.
Enjoyed hearing about the work some local veterans are doing in our community as small business owners. Looking forward to continuing to collaborate with Clear Path for Veterans, the Institute for Veterans & Military Families at Syracuse University, and other local organizations to support veterans entrepreneurship in CNY.
Great to meet with representatives from the Onondaga Earth Corps. This organization engages youth and veterans in our community to participate in conservation projects to help make CNY a better place.

'Turning the Tide in Oswego County,' Katko says
“Between Safe Haven and Fort Ontario, the marine sanctuary and great developments with keeping the James A. Fitzpatrick Nuclear Power Plant open, it feels like we’re starting to turn the tide in Oswego County,” Katko said.

Congratulations to Marcellus High School senior Sarah Rohe for being named New York’s Dairy Princess this year! After each county in New York State awards its Dairy Princess, contestants enter a statewide contest for title of New York’s Dairy Princess. Contestants are evaluated on an interview, a prepared speech and overall knowledge of dairy products and the industry, as well as personality and poise. Check out the Post-Standard’s story here. Congratulations again, Sarah – see you at the New York State Fair!
