Fighting for the Owasco Lake Watershed

I continue to remain focused on ensuring the long-term health of the Owasco Lake Watershed.
It is critical that we act now to protect our water infrastructure here in Central New York and around the country. Part of doing so means conducting further research so that we can fully understand the threats posed by the harmful algal blooms that have affected Cayuga County.  That's why, this week, I've urged President Trump to prioritize this issue and to allocate the necessary funding to help maintain safe drinking water for our community.

Plan 2014 Update: Raising Concerns to President Trump

I know that many Wayne, Cayuga and Oswego County property owners, businesses and farmers remain concerned with the impact Plan 2014 will have on our community.
That's why I've raised our concerns surrounding the implementation of this Plan to the Trump Administration. We were promised by the outgoing Administration that an economic study would be conducted and shared - and this simply did not happen. Our community will suffer millions of dollars in economic damage if Plan 2014 is put into place without mitigation action, and I will continue to seek answers on this disastrous measure.

Withdrawal From the Trans-Pacific Partnership

I am pleased with this week's news that the U.S. has withdrawn from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). While trade can be of great benefit to the nation and world's economy, the terms of the TPP failed to prioritize the American workforce, address unfair trade practices and prevent currency manipulation. Further, the TPP failed to recognize mistakes of past trade deals which have harmed Central New York's manufacturing industry and economy. I look forward to building upon this momentum in Congress to reform our tax code, reign in regulation and help grow our economy.

Around Central New York

I had the pleasure of meeting with Eli Smith, recipient of the 2016 New York State Minority Business of the Year Award.
I enjoyed our discussion on improving the climate for small business in CNY and working together to address the devastating rate of local poverty.

Enjoyed meeting with public policy graduate students who are enrolled at the Maxwell School at Syracuse University. We had a productive conversation on the important relationship between the U.S. and Mexico, as well as domestic policies on trade and immigration.

I had the honor of joining the NYS Canal Corporation and Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor last week to celebrate the Barge Canal's official designation as a National Historic Landmark. This designation will help our region's growing tourism efforts.

Again, thank you for subscribing to my e-newsletter!

Q: What would be your most pressing individual priorities in Congress for the next year?

A: Really, local priorities. Continuing to work on the heroin epidemic, which is going full speed ahead here unfortunately. Working on jobs and the economy. Continuing my efforts with tourism...But I think jobs and economy are always paramount.
